Two New York City patrol officers responding to a radio report of a gun were shot in the Bronx around 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the police.

The officers were brought to St. Barnabas Hospital and were expected to survive, the police said. A suspect was taken into custody and was being treated at the same hospital.

The officers were responding to the radio report when the shooting took place on Beaumont Avenue, in the Belmont section of the borough, the police said. Mayor Bill de Blasio was on his way to the hospital, where he and Police Commissioner Dermot F. Shea were expected to hold a news conference late Wednesday night.

Oswald Feliz, a member of the New York City Council, who represents the Bronx, noted that the shooting happened on the eve of Thanksgiving.

“As someone who reps a high-crime district, will always be grateful,” for the New York City Police Department, Mr. Feliz wrote on Twitter.

“I’m thankful, and more importantly, the people who live in these high-crime neighborhoods are thankful,” he wrote.

Representative Ritchie Torres, a Democrat who represents the area, asked for prayers for the officers, writing on Twitter that New Yorkers must support Mayor-elect Eric Adams “as he seeks to crush the epidemic of violence that has taken hold in the Bronx and elsewhere in the City.”

According to Police Department statistics, shooting incidents in the Bronx in 2021 are at their highest level at this point in the year since 1996.

The shooting came after an unrelated incident in Canarsie, Brooklyn, where an officer was hit by a car while stopping a vehicle at East 83rd Street and Foster Avenue around 6:38 p.m., the police said. The officer was in critical but stable condition, the police said, and might have a broken leg or ankle as well as lacerations.

Two suspects fled, leaving a vehicle behind, and no one was taken into custody in the Brooklyn incident, the police said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
